Build and Features

At a glance, the Soundcore Boom 2 looks like your standard run-of-the-mill Bluetooth speaker. It has a handle, sports an IPX7 Waterproof exterior and floats on water. However, the moment you turn it on, you both hear and see that this speaker is ready to take your party to the next level. On the front, you have a 50W racetrack subwoofer flanked by two 15W tweeters. This arrangement aims to deliver dynamic 2.1-channel audio with clean highs and a booming bass. Then, with the Boom 2’s own BassUp™ 2.0 technology, you can increase this speaker’s base 60W output to a hefty 80W.

As a visual complement to this sound presentation, you then have the sides of the Boom 2. These passive radiators immerse you even deeper into your music with a customizable lightshow that reacts to the beat of your music.

By the speaker’s handle you have the Boom 2’s on board controls. Here, you have access to the power button, Bluetooth button, volume controls, play/pause, PartyCast, and BassUp. The play/pause button also controls track movement, where two presses trigger the next track while three presses trigger the previous track. The Bluetooth button allows you to both enter into pairing mode as well as toggle the TWS pairing mode. TWS (True Wireless Stereo) technology allows you to pair a second TWS-ready speaker to achieve a stereo sound presentation from the two speakers. Expanding on that, the PartyCast button and feature allows you to link the Boom 2 with over 100 other PartyCast-compatible speakers for an even more immersive sound experience.

Lastly, on the back you have a USB-A and a USB-C port behind a tethered rubber cover. The USB-C port is used for charging the speaker. Meanwhile, the USB-A port provides outbound charging of connected devices using the speakers own 4900mAh battery.

As far as builds are concerned, the Soundcore Boom 2 Portable Speaker gives you your money’s worth in the physical features department. It is a rugged outdoor speaker that is protected from the elements thanks to its floatation and IPX7 waterproof resistance features. You have full control of your media from the onboard controls alone, reducing dependency on the Soundcore companion app. The reactive lighting feature on the speaker’s passive radiators is a very nice touch, adding a bit of visual character to the Boom 2. Lastly, you cannot overlook both the 24-hr total playtime and charging capabilities of the speaker, which one would expect from a product from the Anker family.

Performance and More Features

Through the Soundcore app, you can experience everything the Soundcore Boom 2 has to offer. At its base, the app gives you access to media controls, the user manual, the auto power off timer, and firmware updates. More importantly, here is where you access the Boom 2’s customization features for both the lighting and sound presentation.

While you can create and save your own custom EQ’s, the Soundcore app presents you with four packaged EQ’s to use.

Soundcore Signature – The default sound presentation of the Boom 2 speaker provides an even blend of the mid and high ranges while putting a lean on the lows. This default EQ is a very enjoyable one that gets the job done, especially since the job is to emphasize just how good the bass is from the Boom 2.

Voice – This EQ allows you to hear the vocal ranges more easily by taking away emphasis from the other ranges. The mid range stays at the same level as it does in both the Soundcore Signtature and Treble Boost EQ’s. While this does result in a sound presentation that allows you to hear voice output better, it does not do anything to enhance it. If anything, this EQ’s presentation comes across more as a “Balanced” sound, with a slight lean on bass.

Treble Boost – This EQ leans in on the low and high ranges while continuing to keep the mid range at the same level as in the previous two EQ’s. While you do not get as much bass as you do from the Soundcore Signature EQ, you still get the kind of bass-boosted presentation that you would want from a speaker like the Boom 2. The lean on the highs gives your music sharper and clearer percussion. Add on BassUp 2.0, and Treble Boost is easily my preferred choice as a packaged EQ for this speaker.

Balanced – This EQ appears to bring all the ranges down from where they were in the other EQ’s, leaving them leveled closely with one another. While not my ideal EQ for a speaker whose sound highlight is its bass, this EQ delivers what its name suggests.

Overall, the sound presentation on the Boom 2 is powerful and vibrant. At its loudest setting it can easily be heard in crowded outdoor settings. This is especially the case when BassUp 2.0 is activated, where you can feel the bass from your seat at considerable distances. At its base, the Boom 2 provides an impressive space filling sound that you can live with without ever touching the free Soundcore companion app.

BassUp truly allows you to experience the strength of that “booming” bass that the Boom 2 touts itself for. The bass is room-filling and punchy, without getting muddy at even the loudest of volumes. It is a feature I simply left on throughout the bulk of my usage of the Boom 2. However, having BassUp as a togglable feature on both the speaker and through the app is a nice touch. If at any point you feel that the bass could be a nuisance to people either nearby or below you, you can quickly toggle the feature off. This allows you to continue to enjoy whatever EQ setting is currently active, since BassUp works independently of your EQ settings.
