Certain head and neck cancers may be tied to sexual activity, marijuana use, and human papillomavirus (HPV ) type 16.

That news comes from Johns Hopkins University’s Maura Gillison, MD, PhD, and colleagues, who studied 240 people with head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (head and neck cancers). Some of their cancers tested positive for HPV 16; others were negative for HPV 16.

The patients answered questions about their lifestyle. For comparison, 322 cancer-free people answered the same lifestyle questions.

Here’s what the researchers learned:

  • Head and neck cancers that were positive for HPV 16 were associated with having more oral sex partners and smoking more marijuana.
  • Head and neck cancers that were negative for HPV 16 weren’t linked to sex or marijuana. Instead, they were tied to smoking tobacco, drinking alcohol, and having poor oral hygiene.

The incandescent light bulb, one of the most venerable inventions of its era but deemed too inefficient for our own, will be phased off the U.S. market beginning in 2012 under the new energy law just approved by Congress. Although this will reduce electricity costs and minimize new bulb purchases in every household in America, you may be feeling in the dark about the loss of your old, relatively reliable source of light. Here’s a primer on the light bulb phase-out and what will mean to you Read the rest of this entry »

    Off beat news

    Source- Nationalgeographic.com

squidFebruary 22, 2007—In Antarctica’s Ross Sea, a fishing boat has caught what is likely the world’s biggest known colossal squid (yes, that’s the species’ name), New Zealand officials announced today.

Heavier than even giant squid, colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni) have eyes as wide as dinner plates and sharp hooks on some of their suckers. The new specimen weighs in at an estimated 990 pounds (450 kilograms).

The sea monster had become entangled while feeding on Patagonian toothfish (toothfish photos) caught on long lines of hooks. The crew then maneuvered the squid into a net and painstakingly hauled it aboard—a two-hour process.

The animal was frozen and placed in a massive freezer below decks. Now in New Zealand, the carcass awaits scientific analysis.

“Even basic questions such as how large does this species grow to and how long does it live for are not yet known,” said New Zealand Fisheries Minister Jim Anderton in a statement.

The deep-sea species was first discovered in 1925, though the only evidence was two tentacles found in a sperm whale’s stomach. Since then there have been only a scattering of sightings, including a colossal squid caught in 2003 in the same region as the recent find.

The new specimen is likely the first intact male ever recovered, Anderton said.

Squid expert Steve O’Shea told local press, “I can assure you that this is going to draw phenomenal interest.”

For one thing, added the Auckland University of Technology professor, the squid would yield calamari rings the size of tractor tires.

Filed Under (fine, bras, singapore, news) by Kiss0912, Thunder E on 05-06-2007

So I HAD to post this when I saw this on Yahoo.com simply because it took place in my home country and I can honestly say that this is THE most scandalous news that’s probably come out of Singapore. HA!

    bras

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - A Singapore radio station was fined for organizing a contest in which women were asked to remove their bra as quickly as possible from under their clothes.

Singapore’s Media Development Authority said state-owned MediaCorp Radio would be fined S$15,000 ($9,800) for broadcasting “exploitative and inappropriate content” in its program “No Bra Days with the Muttons” in March.

“The two DJs had made sexually suggestive comments on how fast the bras were removed, as well as the color, design and cup size of the bras, and the size of the girls’ breasts,” the regulator said in a statement late on Monday.

The Media Development Authority said the women were also asked to pose with their bras for videos that the radio station posted on its Web site and on the video-sharing YouTube Web site.

MediaCorp officials were not immediately available to comment.

Now this is the craziets thing.. discriminated over your hair color? How ridiculous is that?

According to BBC- A Newcastle family claim they have been forced from two homes by thugs who have targeted them over their ginger hair.

Kevin and Barbara Chapman say they and their four children, aged between 10 and 13, have endured years of taunts, smashed windows and violence.

They said they moved from Walker to Newbiggin Hall to try to escape the bullying, and then again to Kenton Bar.

Son Kevin, 11, said he was recently punched in a street attack. Newcastle Council is “discussing the situation”.

Mr Chapman, 49, said his 10-year-old daughter Ryelle and sons Daniel, 10, and Jordan, 13, have also been badly affected.

He said each time the family received abuse they moved home.

The family also say they have endured their homes being daubed in graffiti.

Mr Chapman said: “The abuse we get is unbelievable. It started more than three years ago, when the kids started getting bullied by lads over the colour of their hair.

“They’ve been punched and kicked and thrown over a hedge. Every time they go out these gangs get to them.”

He added that the family now wanted to move again.

Community police officer Sergeant Colin Murray, of Northumbria Police, said there had been a number of incidents all of which had been fully investigated.

Commenting on the matter, a Newcastle City Council spokesman said: “We are currently discussing their situation.”

I don’t like posting a lot of political stuff but I felt this would be a very interesting read for all those political nuts out there, be it democrat or republican. I must say its a very interesting read and a sad one at that, enjoy…….

After a day of filming at Edwards’s summer home on Figure Eight Island in the Outer Banks, we went out to dinner. Afterward, while Elizabeth drove the car home, John and I headed back on his boat; as the darkness closed in, we got lost in the tall grasses of the shallow waterways. He finally found the channel; and back in his living room, we talked about the likelihood of war in Iraq. Edwards said no one had yet made the case to him. Read the rest of this entry »

Guess you can’t celebrate your accolades anymore

GALESBURG, Ill. - Caisha Gayles graduated with honors last month, but she is still waiting for her diploma. The reason: the whoops of joy from the audience as she crossed the stage.

Gayles was one of five students denied diplomas from the lone public high school in Galesburg after enthusiastic friends or family members cheered for them during commencement. Read the rest of this entry »

The ratings picture is getting worse for CBS’ “Evening News With Katie Couric.”

Last week, the network’s flagship newscast drew its smallest audience since 1987, according to Nielsen Media Research.

ABC’s “World News With Charles Gibson,” on the other hand, recorded its fifth straight week as the most-watched evening newscast on the air.

WHAAAAAATTTTT??? I’m all about reality TV, trust me I totally voted Sanjaya OFF TV. But this is taking reality to an entirely new level. I cannot believe that a producer/television station would be willing to portray desperation and vulnerability in such a demeaning way. Here’s the an excerpt of the story courtesy of BBC news, read more after the jump.

    Outcry over TV kidney competition
A Dutch TV station says it will go ahead with a programme in which a terminally ill woman selects one of three patients to receive her kidneys.

Political parties have called for The Big Donor Show to be scrapped, but broadcaster BNN says it will highlight the country’s shortage of organ donors.

“It’s a crazy idea,” said Joop Atsma, of the ruling Christian Democrat Party.

“It can’t be possible that, in the Netherlands, people vote about who’s getting a kidney,” he told the BBC.

The programme, from Big Brother creators Endemol, is due to be screened on Friday night.
