Build, Features and Comfort

The driving force of the EAH-AZ100’s is Technics’ new proprietary Magnetic Fluid Driver. Tested in collaboration with professional music producers, these drivers are designed to reproduce a natural and quality sound that is in line with what the artists envisioned, without any sound enhancement. Magnetic Fluid is injected between the driver magnet and voice coil to promote low-distortion playback. Then the “ultra-thin free edge” allows for a frequency of 3Hz for producing rich bass. That is then backed up by an aluminum diaphragm for presenting high resolution sound separation and details.

At a glance, the EAH-AZ100’s are quite similar in build, function and appearance to that of the EAH-AZ80’s.

In comparison to the EAH-AZ80’s, the concha-fit design and shape has been updated, reducing the size and weight of each EAH-AZ100 ear bud. The earbuds are controlled through touch controls on the sides of each of the earbuds. Through single, double, and triple taps as well as press and hold inputs, you can exercise a high level of control over your media and listening experience. What is nice about the EAH-AZ100’s is that its companion app gives you a very high level of customizability as to what those various inputs control, by each earbud.

Of course, we will go deeper into what that app offers you in the next section of this review.

The EAH-AZ100’s incorporates Technics’ own Adaptive Noise Cancelling (ANC), actively optimizing noise cancellation as the sounds in your environment change. When it comes to communication, the EAH-AZ100’s utilize Technics’ new Voice Focus AI technology. An AI noise reduction chip along with the three microphones in each earbud work together to ensure clear call quality in even the noisiest of scenarios.

The headset also features single bud use, smart sensors for detecting ear bud removal, and multipoint connectivity with up to three devices. The EAH-AZ100’s support the LC3 codec for low-latency audio for gaming and LDAC for high-resolution wireless audio. However, the LDAC mode cannot be used when connecting the headset to three devices.

Not to be overlooked is the EAH-AZ100’s battery life and charging times.

At its max, these earbuds can give you up to 10 hours of usage on a single charge with LDAC and ANC off. This totals out to 29 hours of total usage when you involve the charging case.  However, even with both LDAC and ANC active, you still get a very solid seven hours of use on a single charge, and 18 hours in total with the case.

The Technics EAH-AZ100 True Wireless Earbuds takes the already solid and comfortable build of the EAH-AZ80’s and improves upon it. The overall form factor is both smaller and lighter, allowing for long term use without any noticeable wearing fatigue. Whether I was at my desk, commuting, or at the gym, the EAH-AZ100’s remained both comfortable and secure in my ears for hours on end. When at the gym, the ear buds’ IPX4 rating of water resistance allowed me to run worry-free, knowing that sweating was no issue here.

The touch controls on the EAH-AZ100’s were both responsive and easy to use, making single, double and triple taps a breeze. Best of all, with both LDAC and ANC active, I still got a whopping seven hours of continuous use on a single charge without having to even look at the charging case.

In terms of build and comfort, the EAH-AZ100’s impress with its quality design.

More Features and Performance

The Technics Audio Connect mobile app opens the door to all of the functionality that the EAH-AZ100’s can offer. You can monitor battery status, toggle or customize EQ’s, and finagle through a variety of listening modes. The app even walks you through proper wearing positioning, recommended settings, and noise cancellation optimization.

Going further, you can also adjust the number of multipoint connections, activate LDAC, enable spatial audio, or even test the Voice Focus AI feature.

The app gives you a pretty comprehensive level of control over your headset.

As for the meat and potatoes of these earbuds, the sound presentation of the EAH-AZ100’s is simply impressive.  The EAH-AZ100’s sport an impressive battery life of the EAH-AZ100’s, even with ANC and LDAC on. As such, LDAC and ANC was active throughout the bulk of my listening with these earbuds, despite the higher battery drainage rates. This allowed me to experience the best sound that these earbuds had to offer.

The high, mid and low ranges are each represented clearly and distinctly, allowing each range to stand out and impress on its own. This is particularly highlighted when you start to play around with the various “boost” EQ’s. Regardless of the packaged EQ’s you apply, the EAH-AZ100’s are able to highlight their target ranges while taking nothing away from from the others.

The “Direct” EQ gives you the balanced sound presentation of the EAH-AZ100’s. You get clean percussion, clear vocals, vibrant instrumentals and a vivid non-muddy bass. Bass+ gave a nice kick to the bass, while leaving mids and highs at exactly where they sat within the Direct EQ. Super Bass+ did the same while pushing the bass to an even deeper and boomier level, while impressively not muddling the bass. Treble+ went in the other direction, leaving the mids and the bass at their default levels while highlighting the instrumentals. This was my preferred EQ for general music listening. Dynamic was an interesting packaged that simply gave a bump to the high, mid and low ranges all at once, a sort of mix of Boost+, Treble+, and Vocal EQ. However, in comparison, this merely felt like a “louder” version of the Direct EQ.

When trying out spatial audio listening with Dolby Atmos, I found that this feature was better suited for movie or video consumption rather than for music.  The Dolby Atmos does add that spatial audio feel to the sound, but it did noticeably lower the overall volume as well. As such, it did not do as much for me in music listening as it did with video watching, and more so with action-focused shows. Impacts and explosions had a satisfying vibration to them. The head-tracking feature was a nice gimmic, but not one I stuck with for too long.

ANC and Ambient Sound listening modes did not disappoint. Within the app, you can manually fine tune the intensity of each mode’s effect.

For Noise Cancelation, you can either manually control the level of sound suppression or simply let the ear buds handle it automatically with Adaptive Noise Cancelation. ANC does an excellent job at suppressing ambient noise while not at all disrupting the listening experience. Whether I was walking along a noisy traffic-ridden avenue or in a busy bar, the ANC allowed me to focus on my media with little to no disturbance.

Ambient Sound gives you two means of letting your environmental sound play through your headset. Transparent allows all sounds to play through at a level that you can manually control. Attention pauses your media but also suppresses any sounds that are not voices. This allows you to hear verbal announcements or engage in conversations while still wearing the earbuds. I mostly leaned on and enjoyed the Transparent version of Ambient Sound. I mostly used it during commutes or the gym, where I wanted some awareness of my surroundings. However, the Attention version was interesting, as it did a nice job at only allowing mostly voice sounds to play through the headset.

Like with the EAH-AZ80’s, the EAH-AZ100’s excelled with voice calls and verbal communication. Not only do callers on the other end hear me clealy, but they could not even tell that I was outdoors walking along a busy avenue. I even went out of my way to walk near music and random conversations to see if my callees heard any disruptions. While they could sometimes tell that I was near people and sounds, those ambient sounds were so suppressed that they had no choice but to focus on my voice. Simply said, I have yet to use a pair of earbuds that can handle voice communication as clearly as the EAH-AZ100’s.

When it came to sound presentation, the many customization options and the various accompanying listening modes, the EAH-AZ100’s knocks it out of the park.

Final Thoughts

As it was with the EAH-AZ80’s back in 2023, the EAH-AZ100’s have become the wireless earbuds to beat in 2025. The EAH-AZ100’s produce an impressive sound presentation, sport lots of customization and features, and feature the best outbound mics that I have experienced from earbuds to date. On top of that, they sport long lasting comfort and a no-nonsense battery life that holds up even with its most energy-draining features in play.

Coming in at $299, the EAH-AZ100’s bring a level of sound quality and performance that easily validates its price point. If you are interested in checking out the EAH-AZ100’s for yourself, you can do so by clicking here.
