War Dogs Movie Review

share[ad#co-1]

Today, War Dogs is in theaters.  If you are unfamiliar with the film, here is a brief overview:

With the war in Iraq raging on, Efraim Diveroli offers childhood friend David Packouz a chance to make big bucks by becoming an international arms dealer. Together, they exploit a government initiative that allows businesses to bid on U.S. military contracts. Starting small allows the duo to rake in money and live the high life. They soon find themselves in over their heads after landing a $300 million deal to supply Afghan forces, a deal that puts them in business with some very shady people.  The film is directed by Todd Phillips and the lead actors are Jonah Hill and Miles Teller.  Bradley is a supporting actor in the film also.

Before I get into my review, Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 60%, and Justin Chang, of the L.A. Times says “The filmmaking is surprisingly lazy, even listless, stuffed with obvious music cues and unnecessary chapter breaks that merely add to the lurching, episodic rhythm.“  While I agree with that critique of the film, and how the real story was embellished greatly, I did enjoy watching it.  Why?  The film was not about superheroes, a far, far away galaxy, or transforming robots.  In addition, it shows the “grey area” of war and how the Bush/Cheney administration made it easy for those without great intelligence to make fortunes.  There was enough action, a plot, and comedic moments to keep my attention.  If you enjoy seeing movies in the theater, I recommend going to see this.  Otherwise wait to download it, legally, of course.
