Bloomberg BusinessWeek says Japanese pornography distributors are releasing the first original programming on digital discs for 3D TVs just as Sony is about to release its first 3D TVs later this month. Porn stars Mika Kayama and Yuma Asami, the top actresses of adult-movie maker S1 No.1Style, will star in the country’s first 3D discs, “3D X Mika Kayama” on June 7 and “3D X Yuma Asami” on June 19.

analyst Yuji Fujimori of Barclays Capital in Tokyo says 3D porn discs could  trigger the success of the new 3D TVs.
“It’s worth paying attention to the move because it’s lack of content that’s hindering expansion.”

“I want to try it out,” said Satoshi Miyazaki, 33, who pays about 2,000 yen a month to watch adult cable channels. “I need something dramatic to justify replacing my TV. This could be the motivation.”

Sales of adult videos in Japan represented about 30% of the overall video market in the nation, according to Takashi Kadokura, an economist who runs Yokohama- based BRICs Research Institute. But the Japanese porn industry has been in a 15% decline since 2006 due to the recession and online porn.

The industry is hoping 3D can revive the disc market.

This year’s NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) show had written/unwritten themes:

- bigger, faster, cheaper.

- close enough is good enough.

- what happens when the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) “steals” the broadcasters’ spectrum

Dr. Richmond explained the NAB attendee’s dilemma, “You see, when the mind houses two personalities, there’s always a conflict, a battle.”

The eye candy was there – stereoscopic 3D, eye-popping/bank account-sucking cameras, consolidation/outsourcing, mix and match, NLEs (non-linear editors), MPEG-4 solutions and online/mobile DTV solutions.

Mobile is important for the broadcast folks to get right, hence several wireless carrier business deals to monetize their content.

Anyone who could was hyping their involvement in Avatar and the Augusta Masters (looked dynamite in 3D … if you’re into golf).

Camera Glory

3D All the Way – At NAB this year, Sony’s Executive Hiroshi Yoshioka and his team put their best images forward with a full range of 3D and HD solutions for high-end professionals as well as event videographers and “others.”  They and the other major players showed exciting hardware/software solutions and results you could almost reach out and touch. Sony, Panasonic, RED, Canon and others showed super 3D cameras, but for all the bragging rights, there were few prospects.

As one attendee noted, “I can pay $10,000 vs. $55,000 and no one – least of all, the viewer – can tell the difference?  Cripes, I’m trying to upgrade the whole back room for $100,000!”

Networks and stations still have to finish upgrading to High-Def.

Every network has a 3D broadcast initiative, including ESPN and Discovery, that will launch 3D channels later this year

Most of the stations are also struggling with delivering three-screen service – TV, online, mobile – to catch every set of eyeballs possible.

The movie industry may be coming off a healthy year, but like the Nets and stations, they cut down on the number of engineers who attended “just to stay abreast of technology.”

The production/NLE folks – Quantel, Autodesk, Adobe, Grass Valley, Boris FX, CineForm and others – really put their best collective feet forward.

Doing it better, faster, cheaper really helps in post-production because every engineering group is operating leaner.  So they’re turning to IT-based, non-proprietary solutions.

Norman got a little confused but noted, “She might have fooled me, but she didn’t fool my mother.”

Everywhere we looked, we saw a huge demand for what really matters … storage!

Content Everywhere – Hollywood and broadcast production/post-production/”later” folks keep their professional content just like ordinary folks.   They’ve got raw footage, processed content and finished materials on flash, tape, film, discs…almost everywhere.  Your stuff is your life, their stuff is their livelihood.

All of the HD, 3D stuff at NAB produces trainloads of content that has to be stored.

The industry is producing an order of magnitude more data than just a few years ago.

How much is an order of magnitude?  According to one of the DVDA members at the show … “a huge crapload.”

That’s a lot!!!!

The digital files from the most recent movies are more than a Petabyte in size – on par with Pentagon storage requirements.

The Big Store

Looking around the NAB floor and you see that storage is a helluva’ growth business.

How good and why?

- Higher-resolution and stereoscopic content requires more digital storage.

- Storage technology and implementation of items such as MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 advanced video compression is changing the media and entertainment storage hierarchy

- Between 2009 and 2015, the industry will see a 10X (Figure 4) increase in storage capacity needs and 12X growth in capacity shipments per year (4,094 PB to 47,291 PB).

- About 96% of the total storage capacity will be used for content archiving and preservation in 2015 (Figure 5), increasing to 96% of total capacity by 2015.

- In 2009, 86% of the total storage media shipped for entertainment content was tape (Figure 6), 10% HDD, 4% optical and 0.3% flash memory (digital cameras and some media servers).  By 2015, tape will decline to 83%.

- Total revenue for storage media will increase 4X between 2009-2015 ($415 M to $1,642 M).

Unending Growth – Hollywood/broadcast engineers are faced with a staggering 10X growth in requirements for storing their content in multiple formats for multiple screens.  With the speed of technology change and digital deterioration, they are trying to determine how to save and retrieve the content 10…20…more years from now.  Source — IDC

Saving for Tomorrow – The content industry uses a lot of disc and hard disc media for post-production and content distribution.  Flash also enters the picture for some content acquisition.  But most of the industry’s storage capacity is devoted to archiving materials – including raw footage – for future generations.

Storage Media – We find it tough to believe that so little hard disk, optical and flash (O.K., we probably believe the flash percentage) capacity is used in the content business, compared to tape.  The dollar volume for the first three media is large but for tape, it’s huge and will enjoy overall growth even over the next five years.

While the lifespan of a production is relatively short – just a few years – the real money made is in the film, show, series afterlife.

Long, Profitable Tail – Chris Anderson’s Long Tail concept isn’t theory in the entertainment industry it’s a fact…a very profitable fact.  Networks, production studios, local stations and increasingly independent producers are turning old video content into profit by selling replay rights around the globe long after the initial showing.  The archives and libraries represent major profit centers throughout the industry. Movies like “Gone with the Wind” and “Psycho” are shown almost daily somewhere in the world.  The same is true of “I Love Lucy,” “Sid Ceasar” and other shows you can only faintly remember.

In every movie production and broadcast facility around the globe, hundreds of movies and TV shows stored on unstable film have been lost forever.

The hardware customer noted, “Death should always be painless.”

The big (unanswered) question is the same that haunts every segment of business, industry, society … “How do you preserve today’s digital content for posterity?”

Preservation

The industry is looking long and hard at their growing movie footage and text problem.

Hardware and operating systems change every time you turn around.

Storage media – any of it – doesn’t have the shelf-life of well-protected film.

Bits deteriorate.

A few here…few there…viola, corrupted, lost files.

Some of the best stuff is in the back/forth communications between directors, producers, production folks.

It used to be all of that was on paper.  Now, it’s emails, IMs, whatever and no one saves the stuff!

They have a tough enough time trying to figure out how to save the final product.

But the broadcast/movie industry is spending more time, money, effort on preserving the content they have than in developing new content.

The right storage technologies and the right content rotation schemes (hopefully automated) can save the media industry’s inventories.

It’s better than money in the bank!

Cool, Dry Storage – The industry’s temperature and humidity controlled vaults hold some of the best (and most valuable) “old time” television and movie content you can view.  Maybe Bates Motel isn’t a good storage place, but industry experts are constantly searching for the very best long-term solution. Nintendo’s 3DS will be released a full two months in advance of Christmas this year, CVG can reveal.
UK industry sources have today informed us that the platform holder is readying an October launch for the system – which it will announce at E3.

Now that timetable doesn’t fall into Nintendo’s traditional Launch window. But then again Nintendo is now a blue Ocean company so. it might be a strategy shake up for the market.

Only 3D Game update will be available this summer

Sony’s going to release their 3D update for the PlayStation 3 this June, but there’s bad news if you were planning on inviting your friends over for a 3D screening of Avatar: This summer’s 3D patch doesn’t apply to blu-ray movies.

Tech Radar noticed the lack of blu-ray support in Sony’s initial 3D update. That doesn’t mean movie buffs are entirely out of luck, however; an additional update should be coming later this year to enable 3D during blu-ray playback.

As for the day-one lineup of 3D PS3 games, expect to see 3D versions of Wipeout HD, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, PAIN, and Super Stardust HD. Other titles that have either been officially announced or heavilyrumored include Killzone 2, Little Big Planet, and Gran Turismo 5.

There are a couple of things parents vow:

-        I’m going to make sure my kids have the things I never had, have it better than I did

-        I’m never going to say “When I was your age…”

You end up saying the latter because PC, CE, communications and content technologies have made the first vow way too easy.

We’ve turned heavy duty technology into lifestyle stuff.

Like men’s/women’s fashion, we’ve been repackaging, repitching the technology, the ideas, the stories.

The problem is, the industry doesn’t have rules like the Chambre syndicale de la haute couture.

But then, a better computer, software, game system, home/personal AV unit, phone is more important than a skirt, a suit, a tie, shoes.

When people don’t hit the mark, Nigel says, “And that’s my problem because… Oh, wait. No, it’s not my problem.”

Computers

It was the ENIAC  in ’46 that kicked off computer fashion…nothing elegant, just basic.

Brilliant Fashion – Dubbed “The Giant Brain,” the ENIAC marked the beginning of the serious computer industry.  While men took most of the credit, it was women like Grace Hopper (first to “debug” a system) to make them work elegantly.  Source – US Army

Even though some said the market for “big iron” was only 10 systems worldwide, that room full of wires, plugs, boards fostered IBM and tens of mainframe producers.

Folks started using not overly bright terminals to tap into great computing power that was … somewhere.

Ken Olson, with his PDP series, said the technology should be distributed, closer to people actually doing things.

Of course, the homebrew clubs wanted power to the common man (and woman), so they tinkered.

Olson said PCs would be popular when pigs fly.

You’re Free – Mainframe and mini system producers viewed PCs as unfit for real business work.  They’d never fly.  But they gained traction and PCs really set computing and people free to develop and deliver answers, information anywhere.

Miranda warned him, “By all means, move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me.’

IBM went along with the kids and helped put computer power in consumer hands.

People wanted to take that power with them, so Adam Osborne designed really cool, really heavy luggable computers.

Road Warrior Gear – A far cry from today’s ultra-portable notebook and netbook computers, systems like the Osborne PC above weighed in at a hefty 25-pounds and only real men took their computers on the road.  Great exercise for the executive on-the-go. Source – Osborne Computer

They quickly got more powerful, lighter, more elegant.

Suddenly, IT folks saw content – data, audio, video – being sent over networks, hidden on storage media … it was getting out of control.

But wait … computers were sucking up huge volumes of power and had a huge carbon footprint.

Ah ha! … we’ll centralize and share (another idea brought back to life) computing power in something soft, fluffy, friendly like clouds.

Cloud Computing – While ecommerce and social sites have dominated the attention for cloud computing, hardware/software/service providers see a growing potential for enabling individuals and organizations to take advantage of public and private cloud offerings.  Despite some concerns, most analysts project cloud computing to enjoy double-digit growth for a number of years.  Source — NASA

We’ll even give you a new family of terminals, but we’ll call them “netbooks.”

Software

It was said that a good programmer could fool you for a year, a great programmer could fool you for five years.

Big iron and mini software development was really, really hard work.  And too valuable for mere mortals.

So, you rented it along with a contract that allowed you to call somewhere and complain about your problems.

To help PCs fly off the shelves, we needed new “user friendly” software designs.

One was Seymore Rubenstein who started MicroPro with a great little product called Wordstar.

The First Word – MicroPro’s WordStar was one of the first and clearly the most widely used early word processing software package.  Loading the software was a snap…just a few 5.25-in floppies of code awakened the PC to do your bidding, assuming you could spell fairly accurately.  Source – Marken Communications

Fantastic little package but he told us he didn’t want to “rent” the software, he wanted to sell people the package.  Then, when he had a new version (much better and without all of the undocumented features), he’d sell it to you again.

He agreed with Miranda, “You have no sense of fashion…”

That fashion model worked for years.  But a new design was needed.

Got it … you really don’t need all that software on your computer since you use it so seldom.

We’ve got the friendly clouds, along with sexy portable memory-challenged computing things, so let’s go back to renting it when you use it.

Pay As You Go – While the computer industry started out only leasing the software to IT organizations, cloud-based services are working on a number of different options including pay-as-you-go, activity volume or ad supported models.

CE Fashion

The computer industry has embraced the ebbs/flows of fashion –  new colors, new looks, new prices, new bells and whistles every time they turn around.

They feel the pains, strains, uncertainty that the consumer electronics folks have endured for a long time.

CE designers are always under the gun to make their bosses the next celebrated couturier.

Panasonic ruled the runway for years, slipped to be a solid but pedestrian house.

TVs, players, discs and an array of home/personal CE stuff keeps flowing out their doors without the glamour recognition.

Bringing 3D fashion home from the theater is their next new bold statement.

Bringing 3D Home – 3D has been big at the box office and Panasonic/Sony/others believe the time is right to bring the eye-popping excitement into your home.  Sales of their 3DTV sets has been “brisk” and all most people are waiting for right now is lower screen costs and … lots of content.

Sony took the design crown from Panasonic with great computer, audio/video player and gaming design.

The Game’s the Thing – Video games have come a long way from Atari’s Pong and the early 2600 and Lynx gaming systems.  Today’s systems and software feature breathtaking graphics, wall-to-wall excitement, 3D video, HD sound and more to appeal to young and old alike.

Other houses like LG, Samsung and a host of other folks started by knocking off the “big boys” designs but quickly stepped into the limelight with bold, clean fashion statements.

With most of the new lines Miranda looks over the offerings and says, “You people have had hours and hours to prepare. It’s just so confusing to me.”

When you’re hot, you’re hot.  When you’re not, CRUD!!!

Call Me

Totally new design concepts are tough to come by.   It’s even tougher to stay ahead of the pack.

Take Motorola.

They had this dumb idea about taking your phone with you when there was a perfectly good one in your office or home.

Hello Boss – Dr. Martin Cooper (above) is credited with developing Motorola’s first private handheld mobile phone.  You think your service is spotty today and your service charges are high?  Think how irritated you would be with a phone that cost about $4K (back then).

They ruled the runway for a long time with their flip phone, Razr and other neat toys.

The design houses kept introducing new looks but nothing that made you say viola!

It got to the point that Nigel looked at ‘em and mumbled, “Oh, never mind. I’m sure you have plenty more poly-blend where that came from.”

The guy who runs the One Infinity Circle house of worship figured it was up to him to deliver a new design, new fashion statement.

Beyond the 3-Minute Call – A “modest” phone, Apple’s iPhone set the stage for a whirlwind of change in the mobile device industry, allowing people to send/receive/borrow/occasionally buy music, photos, video as well as send/receive messages, photos, video, music, coupons, directions, location indicators, tracking info. Heck, just about anything/everything.

Who cares if it’s a rotten phone?

It’s a helluva’ fashion accessory that can do so much more!

Nigel explained how Steve adds accessories (services, offerings) to his winning design by noting, “There’s a scale. One nod is good, two nods is very good. There’s only been one actual smile on record and that was Tom Ford in 2001.”

Finally!  CE haute couture every kid, adult wanted to carry.

A winning design deserves…a line extension.

Add a little here…cut a little there … enlarge this … shrink that … open here … close there and oh boy, it’s the “i” (i as in income) family.  iPhone, iPod, iTunes, iGames, iBooks and Ta Da…iPad.

Over-Fed iPod – O.K. so it isn’t really a store display iPhone/iPod but more than a few people thought the Apple eBook/tablet – iPad – looked like it when Jobs did his teaser announcement.  The winning differentiator between the iPad and similar devices will be the apps and reading/viewing content (and costs).

All with the unmistaken mark of haute couture house!

Jobs really ticks off the big fashion houses because … well, they want their share of the aura, adulation, panache.

If you asked Steve and Miranda what the fashion secret is, they’d respond, “…please bore someone else with your… questions.”

Folks have tried it all including the two-day beard, black turtleneck, black jeans, vegan diet.

It just doesn’t get them the bennies … autobiography offers, thinly veiled TV pilots, Kool-Aid crowd.

While skirt lengths go up and down, technology has struggled to become an estimated $1,200B WW fashion industry, complete with its own design cycles:

-        central system, distributed, standalone, portable, ultraportable, tablet, cloud

-        rented software, buy, rent

-        BW TV, SD color, HD color, 3D

-        Phone, MP3 unit, AV device, mobile thingie

Every season, bunches of folks around the globe work tirelessly just to figure out what is going to be soigné for ordinary people next season.

When their products/services get ready to hit the runway, Nigel says, “Alright, everyone, gird your loins!”

Doing tech or lifestyle fashion design is a tough.

Tough Judges – When PC/CE/communications devices, software, services moved from utility to fashion statements companies suddenly realized they were at the mercy of a very fickle lifestyle reviewers and more fickle buying public.

Nvidia had a lot to show At PAX East. First off, all their systems at the show were running the new Nvidia GTX480 cards in SLI configurations. The Also had Demos of Metro 2033, Battle Field 2 Bad Company, & Avatar the game all in 3D. It did look pretty good.

Another cool tech the showed of was the Optimus technology for laptop and netbooks, which allow for automatic software switching from dedicated GPU to the integrated GPU, which goes along way in saving battery power.

Straight out of left field Nintendo just Announced a 3DS that does not require glasses. WOW!!!!!!

Seriously this is coming out of nowhere to me. Nintendo will fully unveil the device at E3 this year. Yep more long line for the Show. More as it Develops

At a Nintendo quarterly Q&A, the exec addressed the issue with the Asahi Shimbun, asserting that the reporter stated, “The graphics for the next DS will be highly detailed and it will contain a motion sensor, right?” Iwata claims he then replied, “Those things are naturally being required. But do you think it would sell with just that?” Iwata emphasized that this last part was left completely out.

It appears that the extra element Nintendo believed was necessary to really sell the DS successor is 3D.

At CES this year LG demoed a motion based control that worked very well. From the video you see very good responsive controls. The demo was done on the LG LE 9500 TV, which is 3D and Skype ready with use of a camera attachment  for Skye and 3D kit for that experience. Enjoy

The Sony Dash is a 7” personal Internet viewer that allows it user to have a desktop internet device placed anywhere around the home. The cool thing about the Dash is that is supports Flash based widget,. Sony has 1000 available at launch,, everything from sports updates, viewing email, photos to a Lava Lamp.  The Dash will Retail for $199.99

Avatar has made of $272 million domestic on its way to $1 billion worldwide. Sony annouced 3D tv sets 2010. It was only amount of time to get the content rolling. I would bet spiderman 4 will be full 3D. Well Direct tv has stepped up the game and are looking to launch 3D channel in the first half of 2010. via HDGURU

DirecTV intends to launch the first US 3D HDTV channel early next year. The satellite TV provider plans to make the announcement at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on January 7th

ources tell HD Guru DirecTV’s current HDTV boxes will receive a firmware upgrade to allow its existing subscriber base to receive HD 3D programming. The shows will then be compatible with the new 3D capable HDTVs expected to debut at CES by Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, LG and other TV makers, as well as existing Mitsubishi DLP models that are accompanied by a forthcoming 3D converter box. Viewers will need one of these new 3D HDTVs to view DirecTV 3D programming, along with compatible 3D glasses.
