Suicide Squad Leads Weekend BO with $135M & $267M WW

3103474-4+suicidesquadSuicide Squad opened in first place domestically with an estimated $135.1 million from 4,255 theaters, an average of $31,752 per location. The opening marks the biggest ever for the month of August, surpassing Guardians of the Galaxy‘s $94.3 million from 2014. Suicide Squad also holds the largest August Thursday preshow of $20.5 million. $11 million of the weekend total came from 382 IMAX theaters, where the film averaged $28,871 per location. Suicide Squad earned $65.3 million on Friday, took a 41% drop on Saturday with $38.8 million, and added $31 million on Sunday. The Warner Bros. release received a B+ CinemaScore from audiences, ahead of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘s B score.

Suicide Squad also dominated the international marketplace, earning $132 million from 17,670 screens in 57 territories over its first five days, for a worldwide total of $267.1 million. The IMAX global take was $19.2 million, which surpassed the company’s previous best August opener Guardians of the Galaxy ($15.9 million). Internationally, the film marks the biggest August opening ever, the all-time biggest opening for an IMAX film with $7.2 million, the 2nd biggest DC opening of all-time, and the 5th biggest Warner Bros. opening of all time.

The comic book adaptation, which cost about $175 million to make, stars Will Smith (AliThe Pursuit of Happyness), Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall StreetFocus), Joel Kinnaman (Netflix’s “House of Cards”), Viola Davis (The HelpDoubt), Jai Courtney (Insurgent), Jay Hernandez (Takers), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Thor: The Dark World), Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors), Scott Eastwood (Fury), Cara Delevingne (Paper Towns), Adam Beach (Cowboys & Aliens), and Karen Fukuhara in her feature film debut. Written and directed by David Ayer and based on the characters from DC Comics, the film was produced by Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, with Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.
