Embrace Your Love Of Whales With These 4 Games

Whale_1 [ad#co-1]

This week, the Huffington Post published a disturbing article revealing findings that mankind killed almost three million whales over the course of the 20th century. That’s a long time, but… three million? Jeez. Fortunately, the tide has turned somewhat in the past 15 years or so, and much of humankind now embraces whales as majestic creatures that should be protected and preserved. Commercial whale hunting is on its way to becoming a thing of the past, and many of us now recognize the animals as the unspeakably cool sea titans they really are.

HuffPost’s article shouldn’t be ignored, and the findings therein are serious. But in the spirit of embracing optimism, and keeping you busy while you surf the web tripping over articles about how badly we’ve treated our world, here are four arcade games that demonstrate our love and appreciation for whales. Enjoy!

1. Kooma The Whale

Maybe the best known arcade game involving whales, Kooma The Whale follows a pretty classic format: it’s an endless scroller that takes place underwater. Your task is to guide Kooma the adorable cartoon whale through the seas, avoiding blots of pollution, human divers, and sharks, and picking up sinking cans of tuna and whatnot. This is one of those arcade games that’s simple yet addictive, as one always wants to beat a previous score over and over again. It’s also a nice game in that its objective is essentially to help a whale survive obstacles as long as possible. The game can be found at fun flash games.

2. Great Blue

Of all things, Great Blue is actually an arcade game hosted by betfair gaming, and it revolves around a classic black-and-white whale. The game employs an energetic but dreamy soundtrack that makes for an ocean-like atmosphere, and it replaces ordinary icons on slot machine wheels with a variety of sea creatures. Oysters hide special bonuses inside, and whales, of course, are wild (meaning they’re the most desirable results and can fit with any lineup you like). So there you go—even when we’re gambling, we want these beautiful animals in front of us.

3. Cursor Whale

OK, full disclosure, this game isn’t actually called “Cursor Whale,” and it’s also not technically a game. But if you, like the rest of us, are easily distracted by trivial Internet entertainment—and if you’re into whales—it’s every bit as fun as a standard arcade game. Here’s the drill: Cursor Whale is a blank web page on which an animated whale follows your cursor around with remarkable accuracy. The whale’s body contorts and slithers in a hypnotizing manner, and you might just be dancing around with it for a while before you realize you haven’t blinked in 5 minutes. Here’s the link.

4. Crossy Road

Crossy Road has gained explosive popularity as an app game, and it’s essentially a new take on the iconic game Frogger. It involves appealing, pixellated graphics and a broad array of characters, and among them is the increasingly legendary Hipster Whale. It was designed as a tribute to the game developer, which goes by the same name. Obtaining the Hipster Whale is no joke, though tips are offered at the game’s wikia page. And actually, the quest to get Hipster Whale is one of the best reasons to play this game—who doesn’t want a mustachioed, picture-taking, coffee-drinking pixel whale with a hat on?
