Great article on who the Wii is helping wonded soldiers… A very good read. Via estripes.com Army Spc. Shawn Roberts must play video games. It’s doctor’s orders. Every week he goes to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and plays games on the Nintendo Wii to help him recover from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident in Kuwait last April. The Army hospital is experimenting using the popular video game console as a physical therapy tool for wounded servicemembers. Playing the game makes the often painful and boring therapy session fun, Roberts says. The alternative is squeezing a ball of putty. “I wasn’t expecting much out of it,” said Roberts after using the game. “You know, it’s a video game. How much could it really do? But you don’t notice it while you’re doing it because your mind’s on the game. But then when you’re done? I was sore.” Read the rest of this entry » Wired article “Thumb candy for dummies.” That’s how, in 2003, Time magazine described Nintendo President Satoru Iwata’s conviction that what consumers really wanted out of video games was simpler, more accessible entertainment — not the photorealistic graphics and massive online worlds that the company’s competitors were chasing. You also have to weigh it against all the advantages that it brings. Also, when we say that “gamers” will eventually be turned off by Wii’s last-gen tech, who do we really mean? I think that by looking at the four different types of people who purchase game consoles, we can get a clearer idea of what is really going to happen. And I don’t think it involves a bubble burst. Definitely a nice effort by this enthusiastic Japanese gamer. Seriously though, how hard can it be swinging a controller….. I’ll have to pick up a copy of this issue to get a better look at the details. You can read a quick summary at the link below.
