The announcement is expected to reveal a series of alliances with multiple handset makers and cellphone operators that are open to the idea of pushing Google phone applications. WSJ notes that the timing of the announcement could always change, but at this point Monday is looking good.

My guess is that this deal will start off with T-mobile. Think about it the company is dead last amongst carriers in the US. This will be a nice boost to their service line up.

Looks like more and more the google rumors are getting hotter by the min.

via financialpost

Anyone can get the Web on their cellphone these days. But now it seems Google is interested in so much more than that. It has reportedly approached the Federal Communications Commission recently about obtaining wireless spectrum, the base upon which mobile-phone networks are built, in the U.S. agency’s next auction.

Never mind the potential buyout of Bell Canada Inc. or Apple Inc.’s much-hyped introduction of the iPhone yesterday, there’s a much larger, game-changing force in telecommunications lurking just around the corner.

Search engine giant Google Inc. has been putting together a massive cable network to provide customers around the world with telecommunications services ranging from broadband Internet to home and mobile phones.

Google’s plan has been underway for some time and is now gaining momentum. For at least the past three years, the company has been buying up swaths of unused fibre-optic cable — so-called “dark fibre” — around the world. Telephone and cable companies overbuilt these lines, which form the basis of the Internet, during the tech boom in the early part of this decade and Google has been only too happy to take the unused infrastructure off their hands. Hello NO!!!!!!! I seriuosly doubt that this will eve happen in the US, but the article below takes a look at what life will be like if our Internet ever gets censored or controlled by the government. Can you imagine a time when you can’t blog, look up directions, or search google for.. ANYTHING at DSL speed? I mean, seriously!!!!!! So scary, and i cannot believe that some countries actually impose that on their people!

“Control freaks the world over, including most recently Tony Blair, have called for the introduction of a Chinese style Internet, where the World Wide Web is tightly regulated and free speech stifled on the whim of a government censor.

Here’s what Internet 2, the Chinese format, will look like.

Say goodbye to downloading your favorite music or videos in seconds via high-speed cable or ADSL. There is no high speed broadband Internet in China. Since every website you access has to first pass through a government approved list, even the likes of Yahoo and Google lag and stumble onto your monitor, as if you’re using dial-up.”
