BeoPlay P2 by B&O – Review

BeoPlay P2 is a portable bluetooth speaker by Bank & Olufson. I am in love with the purple P2 (also know as sandstone.) It is a slightly more compact version of their BeoPlay A1 model. I am always on the lookout for portable speakers, and this model is a stylish companion. Picture me at an outdoor baby shower, toting the P2 around with ease. Or as another friend said, “This is perfect for a pub crawl!”

Starting with the shape and size, I love the simplicity of the simplicity of the design by Cecilie Manz. The oblong shape fits perfectly in the palm of your hand, and has a flat profile. The rubber coated non-slip base makes it easy to hold and also conceals the power button. There is a simple one-dot light indicator for power and charging. For such a pretty device, it is even dust and splash resistant, and includes a suede wrist strap for convenient carrying. For pairing you can start with the BeoPlay app, and then connect via bluetooth. The BeoPlay app does a lot more than you would think. In addition to playback controls, it shows the speaker battery charge level, and a customized shake feature. There are four shake options to control:

Remote: for playback or pause

Alarm: Set a wake up alarm and shake to dismiss

ToneTouch: Activate or deactivate customized tonalities

Last Played: Tap to play your music where you left off

Voice: Double tap to talk to Siri

The sound quality and volume just fabulous for such a small speaker. I compared with with a few of similar size and price. P2 was slightly lower volume, but much better base and richer sound.  ToneTouch option in the mobile app really made a difference with the customized “tonalities”. You can use the preset “mood” settings such as, or save your own preference for quick use. It was quite helpful to use the app to choose quickly, without going too far into equalizer options. Battery life could be longer, but is still average for a speaker of its size. From one charge I got about five hours of playback time with the 1100mAh battery.. It comes in Sand Stone, Black, and Royal Blue. I think just about anyone would spend $169 on such a beautiful, quality speaker. I love it!
