AT&T’s lower off-contract pricing and revamped Mobile Share plans, starting Sunday

mobileshare1[ad#ad-1]This morning, AT&T unveiled a new set of MobileShare plans that take effect on Sunday – they are called Mobile Share Value plans.  This move is intended to attract new customers, widen our customer base and expand our participation in the overall consumer wireless market.  They also mean that it’s never been more affordable to get on the nation’s fastest and most reliable 4G LTE network.

The new Mobile Share Value Plans will be available to new customers, as well as existing customers who get in touch with us (meaning, we won’t automatically change you over).  You’ll see that the price points are very favorable – most of the data tiers have lower prices than what’s offered today and the few that aren’t lower stay same.  We’re also adding a new 8 GB bucket.  See my on-background chart below for the maths.

Notably, we’ve separated the cost of service from the cost of the device.  As a result, customers who aren’t subsidizing with us will save $15 a month on that smartphone (paying $25 to add that smartphone to the Mobile Share plan, rather than $40).  If a customer is under contract with us and on one of these plans, their price will automatically slide down to $25 when their contract is up.  Note that un-subsidized phones include AT&T Next, plus BYOD, paying full price, and completing your contract.

A reminder on Mobile Share – these benefits are unchanged from the first plans:

  • Ability to share data on up to 10 devices (for consumers and IRUs). Business customers may have up to 10, 15, 20 or 25 CRU devices, depending on the plan.
  • Unlimited talk and text for phones as well as video calling & mobile hotspot on capable devices.
  • Each Mobile Share Value plan includes access to AT&T’s nationwide Wi-Fi network at no additional charge.
  • Add a tablet for only $10 more a month
  • Add a basic/messaging phone for only $20 a month (~a $10 savings over original Mobile Share).

One more change coming on Sunday: AT&T is launching another option to the current AT&T Next offer. In addition to the annual upgrade (12 months), we’ll now offer an 18 monthly payment option, and the smartphone will be financed over 26 monthly installment payments (meaning the monthly payments will be lower). Now, customers can upgrade their smartphone after making 18 monthly payments. The new AT&T Next option is designed for customers who want a lower monthly payment and are not interested in upgrading as often as every 12 months. Remember, Next plans are $0 down and have no activation fee – and there’s no additional charge beyond the device payment.
