The Evolution of Lingerie: From Plain underwear to the C-String
Lingerie a fashion term for the female undergarment, which was derived from the French word “Lin” (which referred to undergarments for both sex). In today’s world and in the English Language lingerie is used only for female undergarments, which are designed to give an erotic and arousing appeal. Having this in mind consider where we began with female undergarments back in the medieval times were women wore close fitting undergarments called “chemise” (it is a simple garment worn next to the skin to protect clothing from sweat and body oils).
Consider the crude nature and the cumbersome style that such undergarments provided. Considering the fact that most undergarments were large and bulky and lack the comfort or appeal we see today. By the 20th century the idea of lingerie started to take place. Considering at each stage in history as undergarments evolved and changed shape, there have always been outcries of the risqué nature these new garments took shape into. This happened with the introduction of the G-String (Thong) and it very sleek and trendy
nature. People, even women commented on it comfortably use and even practicality. Yet today, some women will tell you they wear nothing but a G-string (Thong), others will tell you they were it on that special and some still won’t be caught wearing one. That being said, it can’t be said that with all the hostility and reservation each new evolution of lingerie and undergarments do find its place and acceptance. Now we have the C-String, a very different but in my view a logical approach to the evolution of lingerie. The C-string at first sight gives the reaction of “How the hell is anyone going to wear that”. From that curiosity comes the intrigue of its design, feel and use. The C-string proves the point, that fashion and style is a constantly evolving pattern that weighs heavily on its past to drive the future. The C-string in all honesty is not a far departure from the G-string (thong), which clearly proves its evolutionary trait. What I believe is it makes people ponder the free nature of the lingerie- to naked eye nothing seems to hold it in place, no string no band just a c-shaped cup that looks like it hangs in thin air.
What are my thoughts? I say stop pondering and wondering, stop making assumptions on things you have no personal experience with. If the C-string intrigues you try one out, who knows you might like it or you might not. It won’t kill you, heck it might garner you more attention. The bottom line is fashion trends come and go, some have no bearings and others are an evolutionary process. The C-string is here, some will like it and swear by it, others will detest it and whine about it endlessly. But it is quite clear it has peaked our interest and will find its place among the varied lingerie items.
